#TBCCrafters Craft Hop - Mason Jar Sewing Kit Valentines Gift

Check it Out!  It's just about Valentine's Day and I have to admit that I miss those days when my kids were little and really got into the holidays.  Being homeschooled we don't do the cute little favors anymore and at their ages, my kids don't care about the hearts and flowers, just give them the candy!!  So that is what they get!
Being on a real tight budget right now I was brainstorming to come up with some gifts that I could make for my adult Valentines.  I really love giving gifts that are personalized and functional.  The other day I was doing a little sewing by hand and having lost my big 'ole sewing box with all my supplies in the fire, I was down to a jar with my few sewing supplies and it hit me, what a great functional gift!  The "I Love You Sew Much" phrase popped in my head and this is what I created!

Here are the materials I used to create this gift:
  • Mason jar
  • Burlap
  • Stuffing for the pin cushion - I used a piece of thick styrofoam
  • Tag
  • Ribbon
  • Lace
  • Heart button or embellishment
  • Hot glue
  • Sewing supplies

I first needed to create my pin cushion lid and I have a ton of these sheets of styrofoam in various widths so I chose one and using the inside of the lid ring as my guide, traced and cut out a circle that fit the center of the ring.  Layering my burlap over the styrofoam and enclosing it with the jar ring, I then glued all the excess to the inside of the lid, folding the pieces over and gluing down.

To print on the tag I simply configured my saying on the computer, I just used Notepad and printed it out on plain copy paper.  Using a repositionable adhesive I apply my tag over the top of the copy I just made, holding it up to the light to position it exactly where I want it.  Then I ran it back through the printer again and tada, a printed tag!  You can do more than one at a time with this method too.
I added a ribbon to the tag and used straight pins to pin it to the top.

I added a band of lace and ribbon around the jar along with a bow and heart button that I cut the shank off of.  I then added some sewing supplies to the inside.

What's great about this super easy to put together gift is that it would be great for anyone!  Moms, Grandma's, Teachers and even guys!  Everyone needs a sewing kit, right?

  5. Very cute! I love that you made the jar into a pin cushion. I have a craft similar to that but with a smaller jar as the pin cushion. Great idea to combine them into one.
