Stand Up to Bullying & "Raise a Giant" + a $25 Visa GC Giveaway via @MyBlogSpark & @GreenGiant

*A donation to PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center was made in my name, and I received information from Green Giant via MyBlogSpark for purposes of this review, however all opinions are my own.

Check it Out!  Bullying is a big problem, it always has been but drawing attention to it and talking to our kids and others about it is a great start to helping to change the problem.  Green Giant has teamed up with PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center and We Day Minnesota to help kids and parents learn how to prevent, stop and cope with bullying.  The Raise a Giant campaign isn't about being big and bad, but about being the best you can be, it's about finding that inner courage that will allow kids to rise up against bullying by standing up for themselves and for others.
Check out this quick video:

Bullying is one of the main reasons that I homeschool my kids.  My oldest son was a victim of bullying for the majority of his public school years 1st through 6th.  It was little stuff at first, making fun of his glasses, calling him four eyes, and just general picking on him.  I noticed a difference in him in the 5th grade, it was a specific boy that seemed to be the problem and it of course came to a head.  After my son blew up and said something that got him suspended, he changed a little, became quieter, less trusting, shier.  Once he entered middle school, it got worse and more severe.  My little boy was gone and I had a sad young man that had lost his love for school.  He is so smart and loves to learn, but those bullies made it hard for him.  It wasn't cool to like school, wear glasses and be almost 6 feet tall in the 6th grade!  Yes, he is a big boy, but he is a big teddy bear.  So I pulled him out of public school and I told my son, how much he is loved, how special he is to me and his whole family and how smart, funny and brave he is.  He loves to hug and he loves to talk about history and gaming!  As his mom, I could go on for hours about how great he is, but it doesn't really do any good unless I tell him!  So I tell him...all the time...even at 16!  Have you spoken to your children about Bullying yet?
At http://www.raiseagiant.com/ you can learn how to "Read, Write & Share" and encourage kids to stand up against bullying.  Read through letters that parents and other caregivers have written and get inspiration to write your own letter.  When you sign up you can also get tips to on how to get started writing your letter if you need help.  You can also share your letter to encourage others.
I was excited to participate in this campaign because a donation to the PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center was made in my name and that makes me feel awesome! And on top of that I get to give away a $25 Visa Gift Card to one lucky Check it Out! with Dawn reader!  Just enter via the Rafflecopter form below and don't forget to write that letter!

  19. I have dealt with a lot of bullying growing up...the neighborhood we lived in had very few people of my ethnicity and I was picked on at school for being of that ethnicity. Unfortunately, none of the school teachers intervened and it continued for a while until I switched schools. I had to ride the bus longer and I saw my parents and sister less but I made great friends at my new school.
I know that simply removing oneself from the situation isn't always an option. As my kids are becoming older, I wonder what I can do to help them to stand up to bullies if they ever have to deal with that.

  22. I was bullied severely in school. It affected me so much and made me feel worthless. I also dealt with bullying in work. Adults, as well as kids bully. It is very sad, how can kids learn not to bully when they see grown-ups (especially if it is their parents) doing it as well?

  33. I definitely dealt with bullying back in middle school, I was a pretty unpopular kid. I see bullying all over blogging though, which makes me sad because blogging is my happy place and I hate seeing bloggers write posts that bash other bloggers ideas and creativity just because it doesn't "set well with them" or because they have their own opinion on that particular thing that blogger is doing.

  92. We started homeschooling after my oldest daughter was bullied. The school admitted that they could not guarantee her safety at school. A couple of great teachers, called me at home, and told me what was going on and told me that I should think of pulling her out. They risked their jobs by doing so and I'm grateful to them. She was becoming anorexic, nervous, and her self-esteem was low. We did end up pressing charges on 2 of the kids involved. I've never regretted pulling our kids out of school. My daughter is now an adult. She works, runs a small business on the weekends, and takes college classes.

  94. I dealt with my fair share of bullying growing up as a quiet, shy kid, and now my nephew is facing the same thing because he's taking dance lessons and get's made fun of quite often by the other boys in his class. It's painful to experience, and to witness, and it's important for kids to learn to understand how hurtful their words and actions can be.

I was bullied so bad in school.I cried everyday.I was in a fragile state as I had just lost my father six months before.I finally left school and went and got my GED.My oldest was also bullied and I went straight to the school authorities to stop it before it got out of hand. They were good about it and had a few assemblies to talk to all the kids about what bullying was and ways to handle it.
