Check it Out! I have become a huge fan of the show The Walking Dead. It's my daughter's fault!! In my attempt to spend more time doing things she likes, I became addicted! Now I haven't decided that we are in any danger of a real zombie Apocalypse, but it did get me to thinking about what I would do in a event like that. There isn't a great chance of it being zombie related, but disasters of all sorts could occur. So I have decided that having an emergency kit is not a bad idea.
What do you include in an emergency kit? Well of course all the basics like flashlights, water, matches, and canned foods. But there are other items you just really don't think about at first. Since I am building my "bug out" box as they call it, I recently took the opportunity to review an Essential Seed Vault.
This Essential Seed Vault by Back40 is a waterproof sealed canister that contains 16 sealed triple layer foil bags of seeds varieties that can be grown into nutrient rich foods. These bags include nutritionally dense vegetables and legumes and the 22,000 non-GMO non-hybrid seeds can be planted on an acre (or less) of land to feed a family of 4 for one year. The containers have been tested safe and are guaranteed to store your seeds for up to 4 years! Back 40 also tested these seeds in a variety of various gardening environments and insure high yield and maximum success in growing.
Here is what is inside this seed vault.

This is an amazing amount of good quality seeds. They are all in resealable foil bags. You also get a Growing Guide that will help make planting your garden easy and foolproof.
Whether you choose to put the whole thing right in your preparedness kit or you choose to open the canister and plant some or all of the seeds, you can't beat the price for that amount of seeds. I like that it doesn't take up much space and everything is waterproof.
And remember in the event of a world where money has no value, having possessions like extra seeds can give you something to barter with. Regardless, with the ability to grow your own food you will be self sufficient and be able to keep your family fed.
