Book Review: Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent

Heaven is for Real: Deluxe Edition
by:  Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent

About the Book:
Deluxe, keepsake edition of the best-selling book and true story of a young boy's visit to heaven after life-saving surgery.
Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.
Colton said he met his miscarried sister whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.
Told by the father but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready there is a coming last battle.

My Review:
Wow!  I read this book in one sitting and it is one of the best books I have read in a few years.
I don't really know how to you could read this book and be unaffected by it.
Four year old Colton Burpo is just like any other happy little 4 year old until he is hit with an illness that results in the need for emergency surgery. Colton undergoes an extreme amount of pain and anguish during his ordeal but he comes out of it with a story unlike any you have heard!  I will admit to being brought to tears at least 4 times!  At least!  Yes, because it is sometimes sad, but because it is amazing and it brings with it a realization that what Colton says is true, Heaven is for Real!
Knowing events that he could not otherwise know, Colton tells of meeting his sister, a sister he did not even know existed, a baby lost a year before Colton was born.  He tells about meeting a grandfather that died 3 decades before he was even born and meeting Jesus.  What is so amazing?  All these stories that Colton relates are in the bible with scripture that matches.  Told mostly by his father Todd, a pastor himself, he relates the events that Colton tells to scriptures in the bible.
I am left thinking about this story long after the book is read because for me it's a visual of Heaven, a little window into eternity.  We all have our own mental picture of God and Heaven, but you have got to read little Colton's experience for yourself and it just may help to fill in the blanks and can also leave you with a reassurance about the loss of a loved one.
A truly amazing read!

* I received the book in this post compliments of BookSneeze for purposes of this review, however all opinions are my own.

  1. Everyone has moments in their life when they are angry, sad, scared, ect. This book puts all those things in perspective. Im sure everyone has wondered why me? It has been said that God works in mysterious ways. I am a full believer in that. This is a great book to read.
